The Harold - Bottomless 54mm Breville Portafilter

My wife and I wanted a bottomless portafilter for our Breville Barista Pro espresso machine. We had our eye on SAI's Harold bottomless portafilter early on but thought we could save a buck. We initially ordered cheap and mid-price portafilters from Amazon. Both options required significant force to lock into the group head, to the point that it felt like something would break. We returned both and purchased The Harold -- we should have from the start. It is expertly designed and crafted with great attention to detail. The angled walnut handle is beautiful and improves ergonomics; the rounded connection ring and hash marks styling is attractive; and the tapered tabs provide a snug fit when inserted into the group head. We love it!

Aesthetically, this is a major upgrade to my Breville espresso machine. You’ll have to experiment with grind size and weight to dial it in just right. In the beginning stages, there was some messy spurting.

The Harold 54 Portafilter is great. Sleek design, handle is solid and feels good in hand. I like the slightly down angle of the handle too. However, it is not a universal fit for my machine. I have an entry level off brand espresso machine by Cavdle. I found it on Amazon and it gets great reviews but it is not widely known. I am looking to upgrade the portafilter but since it’s not a big box brand, not many options. I could have kept the Harold and ground down the filter frame to fit but that is a lot of work to put on a $90 frame. Not worth the effort. SAI is an easy company to work with and customer service was great.
